What is the 6th Generation iPod Nano?

In September 2010, Apple unveiled the 6th generation iPod Nano along with a host of other updates to its MP3 lines. This iPod Nano went through more downgrades than all its predecessors combined. For the first time in Nano history, the 6th generation version comes with a high resolution touch screen. This means that you can interact with the tiny iPod Nano with your fingertips instead of a little scroll wheel like you have in the past.

However, with the gain of the touch screen, the iPod Nano lost a few things, such as video playback, video camera and built-in microphone. While you can plug a microphone in to find a hidden Voice Memos app, for some users adding a touch screen and taking away video just seems to defy logic. The Nike+iPod fitness program along with its FM Tuner are still present, although both have received upgrades to make them more functional on the tiny devices. The Nano has always been the perfect fit for its users and keeping the FM Tuner functionality was a step in the right direction despite Apple's decision to cut out many other features Nano users loved.

Firmware updates to the device in the Spring of 2011 allowed consumers to begin using the Sleep button to change songs or even pause them. You can also turn the device off with this button by holding it down. Even with the addition of a touch screen, many consumers who invested in a new Nano felt cheated by the lack of features. Previous Nanos had much more going for them and the 6th generation iPod Nano is a step forward but also a step back for the hard work put into making the device amazing for its size. Perhaps, the 7th or 8th generation iPod Nano will add in the features lost while improving on the touch screen functionality for the device. It does seem like a waste to add touch screen but take away everything else from the iPod Nano.
