With the introduction of the iPhone, followed by the Android phone platform, more and more mobile phone users are utilizing apps developed by folks just like you to keep track of everything. The latest trend in apps are local news stations and newspapers to share information that way.
Chances are your local news station, especially if you are in a bigger city like Los Angeles or New York City, are utilizing news apps. Some of these apps are awesome and really keep you in the loop locally, others should not be downloaded to your phone. It really depends on your area in the country. If you are interested in checking out what your local news station or paper has to offer, you want to search for them on your phone. Be careful to make sure you are actually looking at your local area since some stations in particular share the same name and channel number. Download it to your phone and see if it works for you.
As news apps become more common on cell phones, perhaps these stations and papers will begin to hire on more experienced developers to allow these apps to compete with the big names ones from the New York Times or AP.
