How to determine the size of an Invision Power Board header

The first step to importing a header into an Invision Power Board forum is to determine what your new header is going to look like.  The easiest way to do this is to go with the standard dimensions of the current header on your forum.  You may have already changed the skin and CSS associated with the layout and are in the process of designing a new header; if this is the case, you can locate the dimensions of the current header by right-clicking on it and bringing up its properties.  That will tell you the height and length of the header.  Use those dimensions to create your new header to make it as easy as possible to do a straight import without having to change the CSS involved with the layout.

How to find the right header

  • Find a header that matches your skin
  • Make sure the header dimensions fit with your forum and skin
  • Make sure you save the header in a high-quality image format

How to import a header into an Invision Power Board forum

Once you have designed a new header, you want to import it. First, log into your Admin Control Panel on your Invision Power Board forum. Click on the Look and Feel tab and navigate to Skin and Templates which will be on the left side of your screen in a sidebar. You will want to click on Easy Logo Changer. You now have two easy configurations to work through. You need to set which skin you are changing the header in. Select it. Next, choose if you want to upload the header from a place already on the Internet via link or if you want to upload it yourself.

If you upload the header yourself, it will save itself in your layout's skin folder. If you upload it via link, it will simply use the link to display the picture as opposed to saving it to your layout's skin folder. In most cases, you will want to upload the header yourself because then your own bandwidth will host the picture, not somebody else's which is frowned upon. Once the header is uploaded, you will want to head to your forum, refresh the page and the new header will be displayed where the old one was. If you use the exact dimensions, it is as simple as uploading it. Invision Power Board does all the work for you.

What to do if you mess up your Invision Power Board header

The easiest way to mess up your Invision Power Board header upload is to use the wrong dimensions.  If you do this, and upload the header anyway, it will bleed over onto other parts of your layout.  Unless you know how to modify the CSS of the layout, you will not be able to fix this easier.  In order to fix any issues that arise, you can simply reupload the old header or fix the issue and reupload the new one the same way you did to start with.  Invision Power Board makes it relatively easy to import new headers.
