Why reset the a Comcast remote?

There are several reasons why a consumer may need to reset their Comcast DVR remote control.  In most cases, it comes down to a malfunction or glitch.  If you call Comcast to troubleshoot the remote, they will work you through several steps to trying to fix it.  If it cannot be fixed, they were recommend making a trip to swap it out.  However, you can try to reset the Comcast remote control to its operational default that may fix the glitch and help you avoid a trip to your local Comcast distribution or payment center.

Why reset a remote?

  • You mess up remapping keys
  • You mess up adding a new macro
  • You mess up trying to set up a new AUX device
  • Your remote is unresponsive
  • You change which TV your remote is synced to

How to reset a Comcast remote

There are two types of resets for a Comcast remote control: An OPS reset and a factory reset. The OPS reset sets the remote back to its out of the box mode and the factory reset eliminates any of the Comcast-based programming that went into the remote. You want to avoid a factory reset at all possible, because it will render the remote mostly useless with your Comcast cable box. The OPS reset will merely reset the control back to the way it was when Comcast handed it you. It retains all the Comcast programming on it.

In order to perform an OPS reset, you want to hold the set-up key in until it blinks in twice. Once it blinks twice, you enter in 980 and then key will blink four more times. This completes the rest. For a factory reset, hold the set-up key in until it blinks twice and then type in 981. If you enter in 982, it will unlock your Comcast remote control from the cable box it is associated with. Both codes should make the device key blink four times to let you know it was accepted.

Can you undo a reset Comcast remote?

You cannot undo a Comcast remote control reset.  In some cases, this will fix basic issues you have with it but in others, it will render the control useless.  You may find difficulty resyncing it to your cable box, TV and other auxiliary devices.  When you choose to reset your remote, make sure it is a last resort decision.  Otherwise, you may find yourself out a remote control for your DVR cable box.

Thank you so much!!! My kid submerged my Comcast DVR remote in a glass of juice. Comcast is sending me out a new remote in 10-14 business days, but sitting on the floor pushing the faceplate buttons was driving me insane after 1 day. So, I bought a Comcast remote on Ebay for $.50 which I received in 2 days, but I couldn't program it to my box since it was locked to the seller's box. This has saved my life!!!! Thanks again!!!
