Why tip in World of Warcraft?

Tipping in World of Warcraft is a courtesy to those doing you a service.  Any service involving a max level profession that you use, you should tip the player doing the work for you.  The reason for tipping is because many of these max level profession players have worked hard to get to that level, have patterns and craftables that others do not and have taken time out of their playing to help you.  Anywhere from 10 gold to 25 gold is acceptable for a standard service; anywhere from 100 gold to 250 gold for above and beyond service should occur when the player helping you has a hard to get craftable or enchant.  You should also consider tipping more if the person comes to you instead of you going to them.

How to tip in WoW

When tipping, you want to wait until you get the item back.  Many players make the mistake of tipping beforehand and if the other player is dishonest, not only do they lose out on the tip, they lose out on the mats.  While a GM can step in and fix this if terms were agreed upon before hand, it is simple courtesy to wait until the service is performed to tip.  When the other player trades items back to you, you can place a tip amount in the gold trade area and that is it.  Thank the other player and carry on from there.

What to do if you cannot tip in World of Warcraft

If you absolutely cannot tip for whatever reason, let the other player know you are sorry at the very least.  If you have mats or a service the other player may benefit from, you can offer that up, too.  While most players who offer services such as Tailoring or Enchanting do not expect tips, it is simply good etiquette to offer one no matter how small when they do you a service and vice versa.
