LimeWire can be used to download regular files as well as torrent files.  Torrent files are encoded with data and information to bring together a bunch of users that allow you to download a large file.  These users are called seeders, and when you download from then, they each allow a bit of the file to download to your computer, combine and be used.  Torrent files are synonymous with illegal filesharing, so if you are engaging in LimeWire torrent downloads; make sure they are legal ones before you get started.

In order to download torrents in LimeWire, you want to first find your torrent data file.  You can do this via web sites like ThePirateBay.org or Demonoid.com.  Once you have found the right files, you download them to your desktop and open LimeWire.  When LimeWire is opened, you want to Connect to the network first.  This gives you the best possible way to download any file when using LimeWire, while you can download in some cases without connecting; torrents require you to connect to download them.

Once you are sure you are connected, you can import torrent files in one of two ways.  You can either go to the File menu and Open Torrent, and then paste the link from a web site to the torrent into the dialog box or you can just drop the torrent file from your desktop into LimeWire.  Either way, this will open the torrent, connect you to seeders and begin downloading.  LimeWire will let you know how long it will take and how much progress has been made.

When the torrent is finished downloading, LimeWire will begin seeding it.  This allows you to give other people the chance to download the file, too.  You should let the entire file upload before disconnecting from LimeWire as this is a good practice to get into the habit of to take part in the entire bit torrent world.  Even though the file is seeding, you can still open it and enjoy it.
