Steps to Take Before Installing Invision PowerBoard Modifications

When you attempt to mod coding, you should always take a few steps to prevent you from a catastrophic failure.  If you opt to start modding blindly and make a mistake, it could cost you the entire forum especially when it comes to the Invision Power Board platform.  When you install IPB, you have access to pretty much every file that comes with it and can easily edit and change things if you know what to do.  You can either mod changes yourself or install ones other developers have designed and shared.  When you mod, Invision Power Services – the company behind IPB – absolves themselves of any mistakes you might make, so you are own your own once you begin tweaking the forum soruce code.

Make sure when you are looking for a particular mod, you are downloading the right one for your version of IPB.  If you try to install the wrong version, you will most likely run into database errors.  Once you download a mod, read through all the instructions and source materials before continuing.  Do not try to mod line by line without knowing what you are doing before hand and where you are going.  Make sure to backup every single file you modify, that way if you make a mistake, you an easily replied or copy and paste the file and restart the modding process from the beginning.  If you make a mistake, do not get frustrated with yourself.  Sometimes a mod just does not work, sometimes you are off by a single line and sometimes a mod is not compatible with other mods on your forum.  Just take your time, take a deep breath and you will mod just fine.

Modding can always go very, very wrong when you least expect it.  In order to prevent losing your forum and having to start from scratch, it is important to follow the above steps and have patience when coding.  For some mods, it can take hours to install them and this can be frustrating.  By following steps one at a time, taking your time and making backups, you can avoid any headaches and hassles when modding your Invision Power Board forum and other modules installed with it.
