Why is the iTouch recognized as a digital camera?

With the latest release of iTunes, many iTouch users started experience problems with their iTouch as a digital camera popping up.  Basically, the registry details for the iTouch read the device drivers incorrectly due to changes made during the update.  This does not affect every iTouch but enough cases have popped up that several fixes have been made available to fix it.

How is this fixed?

The easiest way to fix this issue is to open the Device Manager. Right click on My Computer on your desktop, click Manage and then on Device Manager. You can also open it by using the Run feature in your Start Menu and typing in "devmgmt.msc" into the box. From here, you have to find your iPod, normally it would show up on its own but since your computer sees it as a digital camera, it will be under that listing.

You have to update the device drivers. In order to do this, you want to click on Update Driver Software. Then, choose Browse My Computer for Driver Software. Once opened, you want to look in the following folder: Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. Once the update is complete, you want to unplug your iTouch. Wait 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Your computer should now recognize your iTouch as an iPod instead of a digital camera.

How can this mess up your sync process?

If you leave this problem unfixed, and you computer continues to view your iTouch as digital camera you will not have access to the device.  It will not show up in iTunes, although a similar driver issue may allow you access to the iTouch as a hard drive instead.  This means you cannot sync music, videos and other media to it.  Taking the time to correct this issue is the only way to rectify your iTouch as digital camera on your system.  You basically have no access to your iTouch whatsoever.

When my Itouch was recognized as a digital camera, I had to start in safe mode, plug in the itouch, then once recognized, I went to device manager and disabled the digital camera.

Rebooted and all was fine, no more bsod.

As others say, this 'fix' doesn't work. My Ipod is listed under Imaging Devices and when plugged in XP wants me to select a program to use a Camers.

So I just disabled the "Apple Ipod" Imaging Device in Device Manager.

this doesnt work grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

carpesomediem 8 months ago

@Meeeee and everyone this doesn't work for:

It seems to work for some and for others it doesn't. If this fix does not work, you need to conact Apple's support line and see if they can offer a more directed approach based on your iTouch and computer.
