Nero is one of the most popular solutions for copying DVDs. However, if you are not familiar with the program, chances are you may not know how to start. By following this guide, you can easily begin copying DVDs with the program and backing up your collection. If you do not have the legal right to copy a given DVD, do not do it. Remember: Doing so is against the law.

For starters, do not use the Wizard to copy a DVD. For a beginner to the program, the Wizard can add to the confusion and make things more convoluted. Open up Nero's main program and choose New Compilation. From here, you want to choose the best type of DVD. In most cases, DVD-Video is going to be the way to go. However, if your DVD player requires a different format - found in the manual - you should go with those recommended settings.

From there, you want to import the DVD into Nero. Find the Import Files option and follow it to the right directory for the DVD you are copying. It will take a few minutes for everything to load, but once it does, you will see both AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders. These are both very important for the burning process, so do not alter the contents or you risk ruining your copy. Drag and drop these files into the screen to the right side of where those contents are setting.

Now, you can begin writing the DVD. You can set it up to determine its own speed so it will work at the best way for the burning process. Click on Write and let your DVD burner do all the hard work. At the end of the process, Nero will check over the files to make sure it burned properly and will let you know it is complete. From there, test the DVD in your DVD player to make sure it works. If not, you may have to tweak with different settings based on your particular player.
