There are many alternatives to the conventional PDA on the market today. Compaq designed the iPaq as one such device, competing with some of the more loaded data assistants out there. Since HP acquired Compaq, the company has continued marketing and developing the unit into a smart phone device in today's market.

Using a version of Microsoft Mobile, the operating system on the unit works similar to Windows XP. It allows you to use a GUI to interact with the different applications and functions of the device. You can download applications as well as install your own, such as GPS software, games and versions of Word, Excel and even Outlook. These can be downloaded from your computer or purchased as software packs. Basic software and applications are included in each iPaq, depending on which model you decide to invest in.

Modular versions of the iPaq allow you to use accessories that allow you to increase functionality. Card readers, wireless network cards along with extra batteries can be added to the unit. Wireless networking, in particular, has become a must-have option for many PDA users. Since most users are on the go, doing business from their device and may not be near a computer during business meetings or conference calls, the device serves as a way to access important information that needs to be shared. If the PDA cannot do that, what use is it for them to use on a day-to-day basis?

Is the HP iPaq for you? Depending on your needs and how you want to run your life, it might just be. If you are looking for an all-in-one device, a device that can be upgraded and added to along with a device that can double as a cell phone, the iPaq might be right for you. Check out the specifications and different units in the line and see if you can find one that will work just for you.
