What do consumers want?

A lot of consumers who do not want to leave their cell phone provider are opting to purchase an iTouch. While the iTouch is similar to the iPhone, there are some things the device cannot do that the iPhone can. While both units are based upon the same programming, operating system and functionality, they both have benefits to a user deciding to go with one or the other.

iPhone vs. iTouch comparison

While both the iPhone and the iTouch offer application use, the iPhone utilizes a lot more active memory than the iTouch does. This means that the more applications you have, the potential for a slower reaction time from the iPhone occurs. Since the iPhone is constantly utilizing free memory for functions as a cell phone, this leaves less memory available for using applications. While the iPhone reacts well to the pressure, it can freeze up more frequently than the iTouch will since the latter does not need to utilize memory in conjunction with a cell phone network.

Obviously, the iTouch does not function as a cell phone device, so this is the primary difference between it and the iPhone. However, since the device does not work as a cell phone, this leaves a lot of hard space and memory for use with applications, music and videos. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of storage space and utilize the device as more of an all-inclusive unit. Since most people use the iPhone as just a phone, they yet to discover all it can do whereas with the iTouch out of the box, you can take it wherever you want to go.

What should you do?

If you cannot or do not want to invest in an iPhone, investing in an iTouch might be a worthy alternative. While it does not replace the iPhone, it gives consumers the chance to take advantage of what the iPhone was meant to offer. Since both devices are customizable, you have the chance to do what you want with the device, install your own applications and use it on the go no matter where you are.

One thing that seems like it would be simple enough would be to offer the iPhone in the same memory configurations as the iTouch. I've held off on upgrading my 1st version iPhone to a 3G because I'd really like to get a 32GB version, but it's not out there yet.

Ace 3 years ago

i prefer the itouch for the following facts

1. No monthly payment on the cellphone network which is RLY expensive

2. The itouch costs a bit less

3.No cellphone contract

4.smaller

Does the iTouch have aGPS? iTouch for me would be more expensive as I would get the $199 8GB iPhone 3G... but there would be the cell phone contract fees...of which I already have with my old phone that I would get rid of.I'm guessing the iTouch doesn't have GPS...but not sure.

The iTouch does not have dedicated GPS, mostly because it only connects to the Internet via WiFi. You can utilize the Maps feature to plot a route while connected to a network, but unless you write those directions down, you're going to be SOL once you're out of wireless range.

peyton 2 years ago

so itouch has no monthly payments after the purchase? and that means free internet??

carpesomediem profile image

carpesomediem Hub Author 2 years ago

peyton:

There are no extra payments associated with the iTouch after initial purchase. As long as you have access to a WiFi network, you can use the Internet on it; however, after you move out of range, you will no longer have acess to the web.

Doug Brooks 2 years ago

The iTouch (2nd Gereration) can be used as a phone within a WiFi network using Skype and an external headset.

JDog:

You can do all of those things with just the iTouch, but you have to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to do it. It doesn't come with access to the AT&T network like the iPhone does.

I'd go with the 16 or 32 GB model, and like I said above, the iTouch doesn't come connected to the AT&T network. You would have to pay for a cell phone plan and get the iPhone to do that.

iphone costs a bit less in terms of net..but i can't use it when i'm driving if i have someone to text..but still,i love iphone.

carpesomediem profile image

carpesomediem Hub Author 2 years ago

Honestly, it depends on who is offering the best sale at the time you're buying. One day it might be Amazon, the next Best Buy or TigerDirect. It really is the luck of a the draw if you want a brand new iTouch or iPhone. However, most brick and mortar retail stores do offer price matching, so that might be a way to get it at a cheaper price if you can't wait for shipping.

I am debating whether to get the itouch. I have the ipod nano chromatic but i love the apps that the itouch comes with. Then again, I do love the idea of having everything in one with the iphone. Is the iphone really worth it?

Rebecca 2 years ago

I have the iPhone (I'm 12) I have to keep up my grades I got my phone from my aunt and uncle& I don't have service yet so it runs on Wi-fi but anyway all I do is text. I thought that the itouch could text anywere when connected to wifi does it work whileriding in the car?

villenl 2 years ago

I was given a old Iphone, and removed the sim card. Is it now an Itouch? I have wiFi access etc.

squeaks 2 years ago

villeni

no it doesnt make it an i touch.

awp 2 years ago

Well, I just got an iTouch and I love it so far. Yes, the fact that you have to be near a wi-fi spot to use the 'net is it's biggest downfall, I just cannot see paying the mandatory, minimum $30 media package above and beyond the normal voice packages for using the iPhone. That's more than I pay for Internet access through my cable company! If it were something like a $10-$15 unlimited data fee (which is the case for non-smart phones from AT&T). But $30 a month is ludicrous.

So I'll enjoy the apps, games and music offline (including streaming MP3s through the bluetooth-enable stereo in my car).

When I'm around a wi-fi point. I'll use it. Heck of a lot better than having to lug along my laptop just to check my e-mail from a hotel, Starbucks, McD's, etc.. When I can do the same thing with the iTouch.

Not knocking the iPhone (I'd love to be able to stream Internet radio via bluetooth through my car radio), but $30 is way too much. More power to those that can afford it.

sara 2 years ago

okay well i would like to get the iphone but i am not willing to pay the $30 a month to use internet. would i just be able to use Wi-Fi as my internet conection?

hannah 2 years ago

JDOG:

U can also use ebay to get them. Thats where I got mine, and it's great!

hannah 2 years ago

Itouch is handier, and you don't have to pay every month. You can get apps for 99 cents or so, but thats it. you can get free phones at stores with a low monthly fee. Iphone's monthly fee is pretty expensive. Anyone have any questions?

hannah 2 years ago

Emily:

I think the iphone isn't worth it. Itouch is smaller, easier to work with, and is cheaper, and the bills for the iphone for using the phone part of it is very expensive. I recommend Itouch for you.

I've just bought a iphone 3g 16gb model for £300 hope its worth the money (it should arrive in two days time), i currently have a blackberry storm, and after browsing the web ive noticed theres always a lot of comparing with those two phones, anyway i have a quick question is it possible to use a O2 PAYG sim card to acces the internet on the iphone or has it (like my BB:storm) got to be on a contract for the internet acces?

Stuay 2 years ago

On the Iphone can you not get the internet or do you have to have the internet

Myfriend paid $99.00 for the Tom Tom application on her iphone. If I bought a Itouch can I do this? Because she said the Tom Tom (GPS) application does not use the internet but satellite?????????????????

thanks

Will 2 years ago

People saying they like the iPhone more for reasons other than the fact it is a phone as well are insane (e.g "The interface is nicer). The iTouch is basically an iPhone stripped of phone functions. Nothing else has been removed or changed except for phone related functions.

LARRY 2 years ago

If I bought an iPhone and didn't use the phone feature isn't it like having the best features of the itouch and the iphone? At this point I don't want to get locked into the high cost of using the iphone as a phone, but I would like to use the camera/video features of the iphone. Should I buy the iphone for its cool features and not use the phone feature? I already have cell phone service with another phone. I just want the iphone for the internet, camera and maybe GPS. Would this be a good idea?

Larry 2 years ago

I forgot to ask earlier: Can I buy an iPhone without buying the phone service from ATT? I don't even want to use the phone feature because all I want it for is to text, email, surf the net, GPS and take pictures. Is there another device out there that would do all of this better than the iPhone? I like the iTouch, but it doesn't have a camera :( What a bummer. I'd buy one if it did!

ravina 2 years ago

can I get the free wifi with the iphone like i do with the itouch or do I have to pay for the internet through my phone company?

Chris 2 years ago

I've been wanting to get one of these for a long time. I would totally love to have the itouch's features such as playing games on it and now you can TEXT with it. I would also really like the iphone saying how it's also a camera and you can call people with it. They both play music which is pretty good. The only reason I can't get an Iphone is because it's AT&T and my parents have T mobile ,therefore making me wait until my dad get's rid. But I really want to call peopel because it would be so much easier than texting and I'n going to take a trip down to emxico and I would love to take photos. But I also want to play games down the road. So what do you say Iphone or Itouch?

I'm in love with "itouch" and i know that there is not much different between iphone and itouch except for some. I would like to know how to get the application for itouch and does it costs to do so? Anyone pls advice. Thanks!

Have a great day!!

I am looking into buying a bday gift for my boyfriend. He has AT &T and really wants an i phone. However, his contract doesnt renew until November and there is a pretty big penalty to upgrade early. Should i get him an i touch now so he can use it in the meantime? Im afraid he'll just upgrade out of it in a few months and the gift will be a waste... Also, isnt it annoying to carry around both a phone and an i touch?

e1p1 22 months ago

My wife has an unopened iPhone she isn't using. I need my mil-spec cellphone, so the iphone won't work for me, but I'd like the apps and mobility of either for work in the field. Should I just jailbreak the iPhone and use it like an i-Touch?

Victoria 22 months ago

AT&T does not give you any discounts to upgrade to get an iPhone. I am due for an upgrade, but they will not give me anything if I choose the iPhone. So go ahead and get your bf the phone.

Amy 20 months ago

Okay so Im thinking of getting an itouch, and my only concer is that when I go on the internet, the letters will be to small for me to read. And the thing is like SOOOOO small and I dnt think that I would be too comfortable using it. So what do I do?????????

P.S.

I REALLY WANT AN ITOUCH BUT I HAVE MY CONCERNS STOPPING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME!!!!

Michael 20 months ago

@Amy:

I think you can enlarge the print when on the i touch by double tapping it.

Im also stuck. i really want the iPhone 4 but i think paying $30 is expensive for internet and i have a good working phone. With the itouch it has everything i need but you need a wifi for it to go on the internet, so wouldnt it be kind of a waste when you can get iphone internet where ever? Plz help

Chris Spratt 20 months ago

Is there any way to "shut off" the phone part on an iPhone 3GS and just rely on the WiFi for emails etc?

Meg 18 months ago

Amy: it is easy to enlarge the print, all you have to do to zoom is to place two fingers on the screen and slide them both outward. Or if your on a page that allows you to view horizontally, turn the itouch on it's longer end and that would usually make the font larger. Double tapping also works but it does not always end up in the size you want it to be. Hope this helps. And yes,GET AN ITOUCH.

I've had an itouch for nearly a year now, a 32 2nd gen and when I bought it, it was 2nd hand. I've had no problems whatsoever with it, i use it every day for music, films, writing, surfing ... I can safely say it's the best gadget I've ever owned.

Apple everything 15 months ago

Apple prods rock iPhone itouch rock and the ipad rocks even more all these rock better with cydia and the wonderfully world of jailbreaking

eric 14 months ago

I have a iphone and a itouch I dont use the itouch any more since I got the iphone for $50 I dont have service on it since I have a droidx with service but the. way iphone is way better than the itouch

Trina 13 months ago

I prefer iTouch! iTouch can be your starter guide if you ever wanna have an iPhone soon.

sara 8 months ago

Well, can I connect my wifi to the iphone and text on it for free or is that not possible. I think its some free application called text free is that available for the iphone. Im going to buy a used iphone just to use for an ipod not anything else, Im not going to connect it to any phone company . DO you reccomend that or buying an itouch

carpesomediem profile image

carpesomediem Hub Author 8 months ago

@sara:

You can connect the iPhone to a WiFi connection to use the Internet. There are a variety of texting apps you can use that won't charge a dime. Depending on where you get the iPhone, it may be cheaper to buy an iTouch. I'd shop around and see which option is cheaper and go with that one.

sara 8 months ago

I can get the itouch and iphone for same price, but Im not going to sign up for service just ipod use wifi and text for free. In your opinion which is better iphone 3g8gb or any itouch old model 2nd or 3rd generation

carpesomediem profile image

carpesomediem Hub Author 8 months ago

@sara:

If you're only going to use it as an iPod, I'd just go with the iTouch. That's more what it's made for than an unlocked iPhone. The iPhone is nice and all, but you're really going to lose out on all the things you can do with it when you sign up for service. I own an iTouch, and I absolutely love it.

sara 8 months ago

are they the same thing at that point though. they offer the same things but iphone has camera right (itouh old models) right? but they have same features

carpesomediem profile image

carpesomediem Hub Author 8 months ago

@sara:

They are basically the same thing. The only issue you might have with using an iPhone is that many current apps may not run on it depending what version it is.

I deleted an app on my i-touch. now its $.99, and i do not want to uy it. howcan i get it back on my i-touch - i have looked all over the net for info

David 4 months ago

If you get an IPod Touch 3rd generation, you can buy the virgin Mobile prepaid myfi card and pay as you go NO CONTRACT, so you can use the internet where ever you go and text as much as you want with out worrying about your minutes. there are three payments options: for $10 you get to use the internet for 5 hrs. Web browsing or 25 Min. Video or 10,000 emails-100MB. for just 10 days. for $20 you get to use the internet for 25 Hrs. Web browsing or 2 hours of video or 100,000 emails-500MB. for $50 you get to use the internet unlimited time access 3G speed up to 2.5 GB

The Virgin Mobile Device cost about 129.00 but is worth it, if you want to have Internet where ever you go, with out depending on an especific wifi signal in your area.

David 4 months ago

The Virgin Mobile Device benefits

I forgot to add that for the $20 fee you get to use the internet for a MONTH....25Hrs. Web browsing or 2 hours of video or 100,000 emails-500MB

So if you don't want to spend so much money on an Iphone, get the IPod touch, but get the Virgin Mobile device, so you can atleast use the internet/texting feture/music and apps dowloads.

That is for those who want to get the best of your I touch 3rd generation, and still text, browse the internet, dowload music, and watch video...
