One of the biggest dilemmas consumers face when purchasing a new computer is whether to go with a desktop or notebook. Both offer different pros and cons for each user, and only by determining what your needs are can you decide which one will work right for you. So, the question still remains, should you buy a notebook or desktop computer?

Desktop computers offer a long-term plan for those interested in purchasing a computer to last four to six years. When purchasing a desktop, you want to look for expandability options down the line. Most desktops nowadays offer the ability to add a second hard drive, add additional RAM and even upgrade video, sound and other motherboard components. While most desktops can be upgraded to wireless networking, they can still be hardwired depending on your network for the best connection speed possible. They can come pre-loaded with enough to get you started, but as your needs change, you may find upgrading to more is the way to go.

Notebook computers offer portability for those on the go. Whether you travel for work or go to school, having a notebook allows you to take it with you and do what you need away from home. They do not offer the expandability of a desktop unit, but they are basically customizable as far as RAM and hard drive space go. Notebooks generally come with built-in wireless capabilities now, allowing you to connect to the Internet away from your normal network. With flash drive and external hard drive options, you can transfer data easily between computers as well.

Ask yourself what you are looking for. Are you looking for long-term performance or portability? If you are looking for the former, a desktop may be the way to go. If you are looking for the latter, the notebook is definitely the easiest way to go. It all comes down to what you are doing with your computer and what you are looking for. Once you narrow down the options, choosing one or the other should be easy.

I go back and forth as to which to buy. My last couple purchases have been notebooks. You do sacrifice some when you make that decision. I may just buy a desktop and have both!
