What are Search Engines?

Since there are millions of web sites on the Internet, there has to be a way to find the one you are looking for. Search engines do just that. By crawling web sites, they take inventory of key words and phrases. When you search for these phrases, the search engine returns the results that are the most popular so you can visit those pages. Since web sites are crawled every day, the most pertinent results are given back to you instantly. This index is updated daily as a web page change, so do the results a search engine gives you.

Search engines do three primary things: Search pieces of the Internet based on a given set of key words, indexes key words and phrases and searches through said index to formulate results during a search. Search engine spiders go out onto the world wide web every day and crawl web pages; during this process, these spiders index those web pages and their key words so that when you do a search, those pages would pop up and you could find what you are looking for.

When using a search engine, you want to be as specific as possible. By searching for exactly what you are looking for you, the higher the chances are you will find it. Obscuring your key words or entering a drawn out phrase will only make it harder to find what you are looking for. Search engines will produce the top content it has indexed when you make your search, so sifting through the results will give you a lot of different content to weed through.

Search engines are not an exact science, but the more you do to work with them instead of against them the easier it will be to find the results you are looking for. By understanding search engines just a little, you can utilize them a little better than you did before. Finding what you are looking for does not have to be hard, search engines make it a little bit easier.
