Skype vs. Vonage

Over the last year and a half, VOIP services have increased in homes all across the country. Two popular ways to take advantage of VOIP come in the form of Skype or Vonage. While Skype is generally used on the computer to make calls between users logged into the service, Vonage seeks to normalize the phone calling experience by allowing you to use a conventional phone to make calls. Each service has its pros and cons and one of them might be just right for you.

VOIP service is pretty simple to do. Basically, a call is made by using your computer's Internet connection into a digital signal that is sent to who is being called. You can use your computer or other digital service to make VOIP-based calls. Skype relies on your computer whereas Vonage relies on a separate digital service that might be bundled into your Internet connection.

When it comes down to it, VOIP services are generally cheaper than conventional phone service. They are also customizable as far as how you make your calls. Vonage allows you to purchase separate hardware, such as corded or cordless phones, to make and receive calls. Skype lets you now purchase separate hardware or you can simply use a headset, mic or speakers connected to your computer to make or receive your calls.

Skype allows you to sign up for free via their web site and download the software you need to make calls. However, depending on where you are calling, you may have to purchase minutes to use or a plan for certain types of calling. Vonage requires you to sign up for a monthly service plan, purchase additional hardware and set-up a designated phone number of keep the one you already have.

One of the most important factors in the Skype versus Vonage debate is the ability to call 911. With Skype, you cannot dial 911 but with Vonage you can after setting it up to properly dial it. However, if your Internet connection goes down, you will not be able to dial 911 from your Vonage phone.

Both Skype and Vonage are not replacements for conventional or cell phone service. Depending on the types of calls you are making, they may help cut down bills and let you connect with friends and family who may not have the best calling plan in the world.
