Sony Creating Motion Controller
62
When the Nintendo Wii was released, many gamers asked what Sony and Microsoft would do to include the type of interaction the Wii Remote offered consumers. At the time, neither company had plans to develop or release a motion sensitive control. However, since November 2006, both companies have been working behind the scenes to create a motion sensitive controller capable of keeping up with the next generation console.
Sony seems to be the first in the race to have a concrete way to do just that, even though the project is hush hush. In most cases, Sony's developers have kept mum and suggested that a motion controller is off the table. Basic designs for such a controller start with a single wireless device that works like the Wii Remote on a smaller scale, without as much physical control over gaming actions as Nintendo's version. In other prototypes, the controller is made up of two parts allowing both hands to control action on the screen.
Whether or not either of these ideas makes it to the market is another story. With most games for the Sony and Microsoft systems having already been in design or released, it would be hard to make such a controller viable for each respective console. Most gamers have already invested in their favorite games, and they may not find a motion controller to be worth the trouble changing their game play in such a way.
No doubt in the coming year, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will address game play in a way to change how you interact with your games. If this includes motion controllers, perhaps Sony is one step ahead of Microsoft in that area. If not, maybe that is why there is not much talk going on about such controllers for next generation consoles. If you are looking for a way to get directly involved in your gaming in the mean time, it might be time to invest in a Nintendo Wii.
